ABET ICT Training Material

ICT training can be accessible for all adult learners.  Below is a list of some features to understand the product better.
  • ICT training for all adultsThe ABET ICT lesson material is NOT software neither computer based training. It is lesson material (including worksheets and assessment) in which the computer is used as tool to complete real-life assignments.
  • The focus of the material is ICT skills. Learners will master computer skills and will be proficient in using the computer.
  • The lesson content is integrated with the National Curriculum for Adult Basic Education and Training. That means that the ICT lesson will cover outcomes from other learning areas. Not all the outcomes of all the lessons are covered, because the focus is on ICT skills.
  • The lesson are all outcomes based and outcomes for ICT skills and learning areas covered, are included.
  • The lessons were developed specifically for ABET. It is not just our GET material (for Gr R – 9) adapted.
  • The lessons can be done on any computer with ordinary software. If you have an Office suite, like Microsoft Office or OpenOffice on the computer, the lesson material can used.
  • The lessons work with any operating system, including Windows and Linux.
  • You do not need to employ a specific facilitator – your usual ABET facilitator will facilitate the ICT classes. With the training and the lesson material even a non-computer literate facilitator can facilitate the lessons.
  • Each of the three modules is suitable for a specific adult literacy level.  This means that Module 1 can successfully be implemented with (read and write) illiterate learners.
The lesson material consists of 3 modules:

1. What is ABET?

The term ABET refers to Adult Basic Education and Training. It is one of the priorities of the National Education Strategy (Tirisano).  An outcomes-based curriculum
was developed for ABET.  This curriculum aims to provide basic learning tools, knowledge and skills and provides learners with nationally recognised qualifications.

There are 4 levels of ABET training and these are equivalent to Grades R - 9.  The curriculum includes several learning areas, including Language, Mathematics,
Natural Science, Arts and Culture, Life Orientation, Technology, Human and Social Science and Economic and Management Science.

ABET Level 4 learners can choose courses in Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises, Tourism, Agricultural Science and Ancillary Health Care.

Adult learners can enrol for the ABET programme at one of the following:  Government Centres, Private Training Facilities specialising in providing ABET training,
Company Training Facilities for company employees and at the different SETAs (Skills Education Training Authorities).

2. Where does the PresentIT ABET ICT curriculum fit into the National Curriculum?

The PresentIT ICT Lesson Material is designed for ABET Learners Level 1 - 3. The PresentIT Curriculum runs parallel to the ABET National Curriculum of the
National ABET Board.

The focus of the PresentIT Lesson Material is on ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and the main purpose is to get ABET Learners computer literate.
Think of ICT as another learning area - PresentIT provides the lesson material for this ICT Learning Area.

The PresentIT Lesson Material differs from "formal computer training", because the content of the lessons and the activities the learners do, are integrated with the
learning areas of the ABET National Curriculum.  For instance: the learners will learn how to work in a spreadsheet program on the computer and the activity which
they will do, is integrated with the Economic and Management Science learning area.

3.  What about Learning Area Outcomes?

As discussed in the previous question, the PresentIT ICT Lesson Material is integrated with the different learning areas.  For each lesson, the Assessment Standards and
Learning Area Outcomes of each of the National Learning Areas (listed in Question 1), is listed.  The ABET Trainer will know exactly where the ICT lesson integrates with
other learning areas.

The skills covered for computer literacy are also listed as outcomes of each lesson.  The PresentIT ICT Lesson Material fully complies with outcomes based education
and was developed in line with National Standards and requirements of the Department of Education.

4.  What about
assessment?

The PresentIT Lesson Material makes provision for outcomes based assessment.  Assessment methods are described and rubrics are included.  The trainer monitors and
assess the outcomes of each lesson.  Most assessment will be continues assessment and comply with assessment as prescribed by the Department of Education.

5.  Does PresentIT provide the trainer and the training?

No, PresentIT provides lesson material.  Think of it in terms of textbooks and learning support material, like posters.  PresentIT supplies everything the trainer
needs for each ICT lesson.  This includes the listed outcomes, lesson plans, activities (ready-to-use), assignments (described to the learner in worksheet format),
assessment and learning support material (like visual aids and other files needed).

The training institution provides the ABET trainer.  This person will facilitate the ICT lessons with the purpose to get learners computer literate.  The ABET trainer
is provided with a full set of lesson material to take, as is, into the classroom.

6.  Is the PresentIT ICT Lesson Material accredited?

PresentIT is a member of ADESSA (www.adessa.org.za) which monitors educational supplies in South Africa.
